Who is Watt's Group for?

Watt’s Group is for owners of consulting businesses who:

  • Are primarily focused on Salesforce services for nonprofits
  • Have been in business for at least 2 years
  • Have annual revenue of less than $5 million
  • Have staff or subcontractors
  • Want to grow their business with integrity towards their clients and staff, and in alignment with their personal vision and values
  • Value having a community of peers to share openly and honestly about their business goals, questions, and challenges, and to celebrate successes

Who will be in my group?

Groups will consist of 5-7 participants and will be assembled by Watt Hamlett from among interested applicants.

Groups will be primarily organized based on company size but also around other shared attributes collected through the application.

The goal is for groups to consist of  owners of businesses with a similar profile while being as diverse as possible.  Applicants may also indicate if there are businesses they would not want to be grouped with, either due to being a close competitor or other factors.

What happens during the meetings?

Each 90-minute monthly meeting will follow the same format, facilitated by Watt and designed to maximize support and collaboration. Each month, every owner will have the opportunity for the group to discuss a question or challenge in their own business:

  • Check-in (5 minutes): Participants share a recent success or report back on something they have asked the group to hold them accountable for.
  • Peer support (10 - 12 minutes per participant): Each participant has a turn to share a question, issue or challenge that they would like the group to discuss to provide feedback or support on.
  • Check-out (5 minutes): Participants share a take-away, action item or something they would like to be held accountable for.

Depending on the interests of the group, the peer support portion of the meeting can also be used to deep dive into one or more topics of shared interest.

What happens on Slack?

Each group has its own private channel on the Watt’s Group workspace where the discussion and support can continue between calls, within the same circle of confidentiality and trust. Members may also use this as a private forum to share business documents with one another if they wish (sample contracts, marketing plans, project assets, etc.).

Besides the private channel, there are shared channels among all active groups and cultivated by Watt for:

  • Client Opportunities: Share consulting opportunities that are not a fit for your business or for which you are seeking a partner or collaborator
  • Job Openings: Share openings at your firm or among your clients
  • Industry News: Share and discuss the latest news in the Salesforce and nonprofit tech worlds
  • Marketing Feed: Share your own or other’s marketing content
  • Food For Thought: Share books, podcasts, videos, articles, and other sources that have been helpful to you and your business
  • General: Open discussion and announcements

What investment is required?

For the six-month period, participants will commit to:

  • Meeting with their group once per month for 90 minutes via Zoom, sharing openly about their business questions and challenges and offering guidance, feedback, and accountability to their peers.
  • Participating in the Slack group, asking questions and sharing information, insights, and support

The financial investment for a six-month membership is $1,800.

What return will I get on my investment?

  • New ideas and inspiration for running your business more successfully
  • A sounding board and second opinion to provide fresh perspective on your plans and challenges
  • Increased clarity, confidence and peace of mind about your priorities and decisions
  • Feeling supported and encouraged, as well as challenged to think differently, try new things, and overcome limiting beliefs
  • Deeper peer connections, potentially leading to new referrals, collaborations, and partnerships
  • The satisfaction of contributing to the well-being of your fellow owners, the sustainability of their businesses, and the health of the Salesforce nonprofit ecosystem
  • The perspective and support of Watt Hamlett, who brings over 15 years of experience in the Salesforce nonprofit ecosystem, having advised more than a dozen product and services firms to help them define, refine, structure, grow, and market their businesses and services.
  • Financially, the expectation is that you will get at least a 10x return on the $1,800 fee, through increased efficiency, better decisions, more effective sales and marketing, shorter time-to-value of your initiatives, and potential business opportunities

Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact me if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The vision of Watt Hamlett Consulting is better buyers and better sellers in the Salesforce nonprofit ecosystem. Consultants are a key ingredient for nonprofits being able to achieve maximum value from their Salesforce investment, yet running a successful consulting business is challenging work. The majority of consulting businesses aligned to the nonprofit sector are small – under $5m in revenue and/or fewer than 20 consultants – and are led by owners who typically have no formal business leadership training or background. These businesses operate in an environment in which there has never been more competition and in which Salesforce and the rest of the tech sector around it are ever-evolving.

Watt’s Group brings together Watt's skills as a facilitator and success as an advisor to consultants to provide a community of support for these business owners so they can in turn be more effective and sustainable in running their businesses and serving their nonprofit clients.

Up until now, Watt has offered his advisory services to these businesses through advisory retainers and go-to-market strategy engagements starting at $7,000 per month, which have often placed them out of reach of smaller businesses.  Watt's Group offers a more affordable option for "the other half" of consulting businesses and uses a peer model to optimize efficiency and value.

Yes, only owners of business may participate. In the interest of equitable representation, if a business has more than one owner, only one may participate in the group.

In this group, we:

  • Believe that nonprofits deserve the very best Salesforce consulting services and we know that no one business can meet the need alone.
  • Desire that any business that serves this sector is able to do so with the utmost effectiveness and integrity.
  • Are curious, open, and encouraging.
  • Welcome a diversity of viewpoints.
  • Value each other’s courage and vulnerability to speak.
  • Share generously from our own experience.
  • Take our commitment to our clients, our businesses, and each other seriously.

Discussion will be based on the specific needs, questions, and challenges brought by the group members, which may include:

  • Defining and living your vision & values in your business
  • Effective leadership
  • Company structure
  • Positioning & specialization
  • Sales planning & execution
  • Services planning & pricing
  • Partnerships
  • Salesforce alignment
  • Marketing
  • Finding, developing, and leading staff
  • Methodology
  • Business operations
  • Managing client relationships
  • Developing IP
  • The role of AI
  • Exploring other ecosystems
  • Work/life balance
  • Selling your practice

Meetings will be held on the following weeks:

  • Week of October 28
  • Week of November 18
  • Week of December 16
  • Week of January 13
  • Week of February 10
  • Week of March 17

Applicants can indicate which of the available time slots works best for them on these dates and this will be factored into group assignment.

You should only be in the group if you can commit to attending each month for the six-month duration. The primary value of this group is peer support. When you are not there, you are depriving others of your support and perspective. So showing up is a promise you need to be willing to make. That said, it is understood that emergencies and exceptions come up. Conversations can always be re-engaged on Slack.

No. This is to both incentivize attendance and encourage candid conversation.

These groups are intended to be safe places for sharing. However, no one will have to sign an NDA, so participants are asked to use discretion in sharing anything of a sensitive nature or that is legally protected. Additionally, we will adhere to the Chatham House Rule for sharing anything beyond the group: “Participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.”

On the application, you can indicate if there are businesses with whom you regularly compete that you would prefer to not be grouped with. And you will be able to see who has been assigned to your group prior to confirming participation. Beyond that, yes there may be some overlap in target customers among businesses in the group. But there is vastly more neutral common ground on which you can meet and from which you can benefit, for the greater good of your business and the nonprofit sector.

Once notified of acceptance, payment will be due in full in order to secure a spot.
